Today was all about luxuriating:

- I went to the chiropractor and revelled in the sudden onset of less pain;

- I received two books in the mail from Wendy Z., so I have been enjoying Poppy Z Brite in foodloving mode.

- Kylie came to dinner (she did main course, I did rice and afters) and we had Indian takeaway plus coffee from East Timor and Pfeiffer's liqueur tokay. We were going to have brie and chocolate as well, but we were a tad full, so compromised with more wine and more coffee.

Kylie also gave me my slightly belated birthday present, which was Nor of Human, which I have yearned after since I joined CSFG. I managed to persuade her (huge arm twisting) to borrow Margo Lanagan's Black Juice, so we will both be reading short stories this week.

I will continue the food kick, as well. It is the right time of year for spices and for slow-cooked meals and for dessert wines. The season is not to blame, though - Poppy Z Brite is the source of the food-aholism this time round. I dreamed of emailing her and asking if I could introduce her to Victoria Market in Melbourne in July, but since she doesn't know me from a piece of cheese (and would be able to give the cheese a name, which means the cheese is at least recognisable) it will remain a dream.

Work today was all the fun stuff. I wrote more (filling in holes - the fun bit!). Kylie gave me a critique of Life through Cellophane, which was just hugely appreciated. I now have a better sense of what I am doing wrong and that I am actually heading in the right direction overall. One big thing I learned was that it was not my imagination that this novel is a tad more intense than the others. I was thinking it was going to be a bit shorter than my norm, and now I am certain of it. All of this means, if all goes well, I will be finished a first draft by Continuum. It would be nice to be at the stage where I could actually take a break!!

On a related note, if I said that I am lucky in my friends would it sound too sappy?
