May. 16th, 2005 02:20 pmStill grumpy today, but the background pain has diminished a bit and my brain has started to return.
The big question of my day is whether Richard I had a horse called Fauvel (a friend says he did but can't locate a reliable source) and if he did was it named after the colour, or linked to the Old French acronym for the Seven Deadly Sins. I can't be bothered sorting it out, is the trouble - I think I will go grocery shopping instead. While the thought of Richard having a horse named after all of the deadly sins is tempting, it is not going to be easy to prove. Money, on the other hand, is easy to spend. Shopping beckons.
It had better not beckon too far. Elizabeth Chadwick sent me an email just now with the draft cover of her new book (out November) and I totally crave it.
There are only a few hist fic writers I get the cravings for - mostly I am a spec fic reader - but Chadwick is one of them and she has pulled out all stops to research William Marshall and I have a gut feeling that she has done something quite special. Little voice inside me saying "I want! I want! I want!" It helps that the guy on the cover is very cute. Not that cute guys are deciding factors in my bookbuying, but they do help.
It is also about time that William Marshall got his due. De Montfort Jr has been heroicised despite his obvious brutality and people die in ditches over Rcahrd the Lion Heart, but William was a genuinely fabulous person and had a totally fascinating life. And I am in danger of getting into teaching mode. No teaching till tmorrow - got to keep reminding myself of that.
