It's Friday night, a storm is coming, and it feels wrong to work. Instead, I have been IMing (mostly about storms and medieval history) and reading Making Light.

This entry ( http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/006415.html#006415 )and its comments have made me laugh because I am *bad* at naming characters. For Illuminations, I was a good child most of the time. Sort of. Give or take six hundred years and a few modernisations. The modernisations, let me hasten to add, were at the publisher's request. All very serious, at least.

With The Art of Effective Dreaming I cared more about making bad puns than about naming systems. One set of names (the Canberra set) are ordinary and easy. The others are all the initial syllables from a couple of medieval poems. One is in Old Occitan and the other is in early Old French - they are not even from the same language. And thank goodness The Art of Effective Dreaming is not coming out in a hurry, 'cos you will all have had time to forget this post by the time you read it.
