Beware!

Just when you thought my blog had become a safe series of predictable posts, Women's History Month arrived. I have been involved in Women's History Month in Australia since the first coffee of the first committee that organised the first celebrations and all I am doing this year about it is blogging. Expect much guilt. Expect many entries. I promise I will try to keep them fun.

Actually, blogging isn't quite all. I just heard that there *might* be enough students enrolling in my Medieval Women course so that I can teach it all through March and do my WHM bit that way. I've said before and I will say again how much I love teaching that course. It is about the lives of individual women and the stuff of women's lives. We talk about everything from posture and food and clothes to politics and mobile wombs and theology.

Anyhow, expect lots about women for the whole of March. If you want to go to Women's History Month events, there is a website for it somewhere. In fact, there are two, one for Australia and one for the US. Canada's Women's History Month is October, and I am not sure about any other country.

WHM is not about ranting and raving and whingeing about how history has excluded women. It is about remembering women and documenting them and thinking about history differently. You needed to know that in case you are tempted to misogynistic rants (none of you are misogynists, but several of you are quite capable of pretending to be one just to stir). If you are going to rant, you need to know exactly what to rant about.

One thought I had about WHM was "recipes". I wonder why this occurred to me? (Did I do the innocent look thing well?) If any of you have female relatives who you associate with a particular recipe or food memory, send me your thoughts and I will post them in their entirety - no relegating to the comments section. Memories in general are nice, but food memories tempt us to cook the recipe and remember the women for longer. Email me at gpolack(at)triviumpublishing(dot)com. I will hunt out some of my family story/recipes as well. You don't have to know me to do this - you can be passing through the blog and never want to visit again.

Just in case anyone is silly enough to ask, men have families too, and those families have women with stories and recipes. Every guy who joins in my little WHM celebration gets about ten brownie points.

All memories and recipes will be treasured and I will be glad to see them.

PS I forgot to say this yesterday, but I had a screw loose. Today I do not. All possible jokes have already been made.

Drabbit. One student dropped out - we are below the critical mass - so no Medieval Women course. Time for sackcloth and ashes.

Just as well I checked the mail before I put on the sackcloth and ashes. Nothing to redeem my finances, but something heartlifting anyhow. Felicity Pulman sent me a copy of her new book "Rue for Repentance". Medieval murder mystery for teens. Part 2 of the Janna mysteries. Launched while I was at Varuna. I had a big ego moment when I read the author's note.

I really like this book and am rather delighted Flick sent me a copy. Now I am going away to privately jubilate for a bit.

This means I will be turning up to the crit group tonight in ordinary clothes, not sackloth and ashes. I do hope this won't worry anyone.
