I was just off to bed when I discovered that a friend has just been given the nicest birthday present. She is a year less three days older than me (precision!) and is about to be a grandmother. I am in awe. Quite a few people on my flist know her, too. If you do, you might want to wander over to [livejournal.com profile] austspecfic and give her your blessing.

PS If I don't appear in the morning, it's because I have met an early death. If I have met an early death, it is because she has seen this announcement...

PPS No, I don't know which will cause my early demise, announcement of her age or of her impending grandmotherhood.

PPPS Maybe cherry brandy will save me?

Today is drear. I am turning it into a washing day and a 'get small things done' day.

I was about to write a dolorous plaint concerning some not-good things which I hope will soon pass. Instead, a Chaucer quote appeared in my in-box (from the rather cool Chaucer email list), and it is so apposite to yesterday - and so much more fun than me whingeing - that I am pasting it here. It's from Troilus and Criseyde, Book 2.

"Ye knowe ek that in forme of speche is chaunge
Withinne a thousand yeer, and wordes tho
That hadden pris, now wonder nyce and straunge
Us thinketh hem, and yet thei spake hem so,
And spedde as wel in love as men now do;
Ek for to wynnen love in sondry ages,
In sondry londes, sondry ben usages."
