Today is all about books.

I could say that most days, couldn't I? Why don't I admit my life is all books and stop blogging? I think it's because some books really demand to be talked about. Besides, blogging is fun.

I was in Aurealis Award reading mode until 4 pm and I only have two more novels and I will be completely caught up. This would be more impressive if I were talking about 500 books. Currently I have fourteen. Opinions on all of them are bursting out of me and I have to bite them down until early next year. One thing I can say is that I *really* like where Australian writing for young adults is right now. Lots of choice and lots of talented writers.

After I finish on the 'Net I will be moving to the Middle Ages. or did I move *from* the Middle Ages to explore Young Adult fantasy for a day? Anyhow, I have just eight books to deal with while I watch silly TV. This sounds way more impressive than it is. None of them bear directly on my research subject, but they all have some content I have to check. Oops, make that ten books. I forgot the Medieval Folklore encyclopedia. If I were really daft I could check my own articles in that one, but alas, my brain has partly come back to me and I remember what I wrote and it's already noted for my research.

The secondmost sexy book for tonight is another encyclopedia, Norris Lacy's New Arthurian Encyclopedia. I have an Arthurian course starting in a few weeks (student numbers willing) - yummy stuff.

The other books for tonight are about reading and writing and patronage and audiences in the Middle Ages. I can't wait to look at Coleman's "Public reading and the reading public". It's not quite my period, but every time I use it she makes me think a bit more about what was happening in my period. I am saving the Coleman till last so I can take to to bed and read it if the hour grows late.

And that's the sum of my day. All this bedrest has meant I am pain reliever free and not quite as behind on things as I would have been if I hadn't taken two days off to rest. If I play my cards right I might be caught up by next weekend. You will know this by the number of books sitting in stacks. When I am caught up the only books off the shelf are the ones next to my bed, for entertainment.

The closest genre to SF in the Medieval world was probably hagiography. This means that the Great Arthurian SF Story of the Middle Ages is the one where King Arthur meets St Illtud and loses. I particularly like it when Arthur finds himself buried up to his neck. I mentioned this at Continuum, but I am pretty certain that most of the audience missed its Important Science Fictional Implications.
