Lots of newsy stuff today.

Firstly, one great step for Gillian, one small step for people who hate telemarketing. I managed to get a telemarketer to hang up on me within 20 seconds.

"Excuse me, I would like to speak to the homeowner."

"That's me, but I work from home so unless this is related to work or is very urgent, I would rather you took me off your phonelist."

She hung up on me. No "Sorry for troubling you" or giant explanations. So the time I would have spent getting upset, I am spending blogging.

I am still way behind on things and Miss Montez will have to wait patiently until I catch up. I thought she ran a fine line of snark so I will continue with her Hints to Gentlemen, but not till I can do the necessary work without my eyes getting twisted. Migraines do that.

The other news is much more significant. Kaaren Sutcliffe launched Kered's Crown yesterday and [livejournal.com profile] girliejones launched New Ceres the magazine (as opposed to Ceres the maybe-a-dwarf-planet). Both worth your time. (and yes, I invented the New Ceres universe and am bubbling with pride and suppressing it madly, because it isn't my project anymore - except that I'm slowly working on a novel set in that universe, and if Nicole would just stop saying "You keep telling me you don't write science fiction novels" I will be able to lose that particular silly statement entirely from my memory and can stop feeling stupid.)

For those few of you who haven't met New Ceres yet, you *do* want to. This first issue is very cool. Think Tansy Rayner Roberts channelling Agatha Christie in a Regency future. Think Dirk Flindhardt channelling Georgette Heyer *and* EE Smith. Think Maxine McArthur channelling ... Maxine McArthur. It is tremendous fun. http://www.newceres.com

Kaaren's book is a triumph against adversity and out just in time for Christmas. Just think, you can give lots of people a Young Adult fantasy trilogy each and be saved the angst of thinking about presents. I can't tell you whether I enjoyed it or not, because it's on the AA list (ie I've read it but my lips are sealed for a couple more months), but buy it anyway :).

In Canberra you can get it at Gaslight, Dymocks Belconnen and possibly elsewhere. Online, you can get it at Austspec fic - and Donna will give you the URL for it if I hint broadly. Donna?... Donna?

Just for your information, Gaslight is in Fyshwick (Canberra's red light district and purveyors of X rated material for the whole of Australia) though Gaslight itself specialises in perfectly civilised speculative fiction and mystery books (there are quite a few non-X rated shops in Fyshwick though from the rude comments non-locals make, this is hard to believe). Anyhow, Gaslight has an exceptional range of speculative fiction, including lots of copies of my book. Gayle has impeccable taste :).

Just think of how cool it would be to receive a package postmarked "Fyshwick" containing a perfectly innocuous semi-Medieval novel. Or, if you can go there, buy kaaren's book and wave it round nonchalantly and mention "I bought it in Fyshwick."

And that's an end of my news. Me being sick of being sick isn't news.

About me...
Random 6 Things Aboout Me Meme
Tagged by [livejournal.com profile] little_foxy

The rules:
Once tagged by this entry, the assignment is to write a journal entry for this meme with six random facts about yourself. Then, pick six of your Flist and tag them - no tag backs. These rules should be included in your entry.

1. I am an historian. Mostly. Except when I'm a writer. Mostly. Except when I teach. Mostly. OK, mostly I'm confused about what I am.

2. I have six siblings who prefer I don't blog about them. Pity. They lead interesting lives :).

3. I don't know how many books I own. I intend to count them this summer.

4. I am Jewish (though I still get regular phonecalls from a friend who is convinced I shouldn't be - if anyone reading this *ever* thinks of trying to convert me, please don't. I am happily Jewish and don't want to be unhappily something else. When I had a Catholic boyfriend we celebrated both sets of holidays, though.).

5. I play with perfumery from time to time. Generally in summer when the windows can be open so I don't give myself a migraine.

6. I read. Lots.

I tag six people who feel like being tagged. Go for it!
