Sep. 23rd, 2006 08:27 pmI had a totally wondrous first day Rosh Hashanah. I do love my friends. Witty and wise and generous and entirely good company, every single one of them.
We had an all-girl dinner last night with scrumptious food and alcohol and not too much work. Jen and Jennie both helped with the preparations and brought salads, Donna brought food, and Kaaron and Kylie and Donna brought wine. I supplied everything I described the other day, plus a couple of extra dishes for good luck. Kaaron washed dishes and we all laughed an awful lot. It was the first dinner in a very long time from which I haven't lost half a day to exhaustion and that was because of all these wonderful friends who turned a dinner party into a *such* a shared endeavour. I doubt the group will ever let me forget the vegetarian main course, though. It was a kind of spinach/scrambled eggs. I invented it as I went, with advice from Jen. It tasted fine, if a little salty. It looked .. different. My eggs were the source of many Dr Seuss jokes. They were extraordinarily and virulently green.
Today was equally lovely (though maybe less green). I prayed at home: I'm still dealing with the bad neck and the related pain, so travelling for an hour each way to pray for 3 hours was overdoing it - and besides, I needed quiet time.
More friends started dropping in about 1 pm and the last left just before 7 pm. A table full of food has been decimated and much tea and coffee was drunk. Vast, vast quantities of chocolate has gone the way of all good chocolate.
The only person to mourn the missing traditional cake was the sportsman in the group. He might be able to wear it off (being a championship croquet player), but the rest of us did very nicely on fruit and nuts and chocolate and olives and other nibbles. It was a lovely, lovely time.
Mum rang to tell me how the family events went and what I missed by not going to synagogue in Melbourne (think large rabbi with big grey beard and a red baseball cap on back-to-front). She's been very good about me not coming down. And I only regret my decision a tiny little bit: this has been one of my happiest New Years in a very long time. Twenty four hours of friends and food and happiness. What a wonderful start to the year.
