Apr. 22nd, 2007 11:00 amI do understand that people like to use their telephones in the morning. I do understand that 10.30 am is late enough so that people can assume I am not being woken up (except on days recovering from pain, like this morning). I do understand that people who only occasionally leave the house are fair game for phone calls at the hour that most suits the caller. I do understand that for some other people it's easy enough to ignore a ringing phone and keep on sleeping or working.
I still wish that everyone would pay attention when I explain that I don't want phone calls before 1 pm unless they're urgent and important because:
1. My whole family uses it as a way to signal emergencies to me. It's been this way since my father's cancer.
2. It's when most of my work calls happen.
3. It's when I have a chance of staving off pain if I've had a bad night.
4. Most importantly, if I'm writing - whether a novel or an article - this is most likely to be the time I need concentration for it. I only need a few hours of quiet most solid writing days, but the morning is that time.
Please only ring me before 1 pm if it's something really urgent or desperately important. Pretend I have meetings seven days a week if that would help.
Especially don't ring before 1 pm on Sundays - if I've gone out on Saturday night I'm busy quarantining pain and fatigue and stuff and making sure it doesn't invade the rest of the week. I was at a charming afternoon party yesterday, for the birthday of an old friend. Last night was bad as a consequence, since last week was bad and so I'm behind again, which is just par for the course. A proper sleep this morning would have solved it because the chief problem was over-fatigue.
A sleep would have opened up the rest of the day to work and now the rest of the day is going to be spent having hot baths and watching the Freddy Kreuger movies I didn't get round to yesterday. At least the movies are work (just not productive work) as I'm trying to get a sense of horror timing and tropes. The more of them I see the more convinced I am that the only horror I will ever write is comic horror, but that doesn't mean I can avoid developing an understanding of it. I was supposed to be examining a doctoral thesis, but I can't do that without more functionality.
Pick the reason that suits you best, and please only ring before 1 pm if it's very important.
