I'm having a lot of fun this afternoon. I said I would and so I am.

My floor is filled with books. There is a pile of cookbooks and related texts concerning the Ancient World, for tomorrow's class; and there is a pile for the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; and Mrs Beeton is the pillar of the pile for the nineteenth century; there is a colonial stack; there is a drinks pile (which includes chocolate, because that night my students might get to DIY historical chocolate drink); there is a pile of delightfully decadent royal fare. The rest escape me.

I'll teach the subjects in the order the students decide. I don't teach form the books. I hand the books round because people who do my kind of course like it when they can see what the books on the subject look like. I put each stack away after the appropriate course. In eight weeks time my floor will again be visible.

And in other news....

The York trip for writers has been proceeding gently behind the scenes. It will start to be advertised soon. It isn't as cheap as we wanted or as long as we'd hoped, but we still think it's feasible.
