A little while ago, I was a bit too clever for my good and I thought aloud that it would be rather cool to have a double spread from a comic book to help track the deep themes or the main plot arc of a novel. I still think it's a fine idea and I haven't magically sprouted a sudden talent for art (why doesn't watching Heroes get me any magical abilities? there's something wrong with the way I watch TV, obviously) but Russell Kirkpatrick suggested another route to planning a novel.
It's similar to my idea of a comic book, but at the same time it's quite different. He sent me an example of his own work, rather than explaining it and is waiting to find out what I have to say about it. Just for once, I'm not delaying to keep him on edge (Russell is very good to stir) but because I have two major warnings. They're on the webpage I'm about to send you to, but you need them twice.
Firstly, Russell's work is copyright to him - don't run out and use his diagram for your own novel (do your own diagram, using your own ideas - in prettier colours - Russell hasn't used nearly enough hot pink or violet and no cobalt whatsoever). The other thing you need to know is that for anyone who reads that diagram intelligently, it contains spoilers. SPOILERS. Now I've warned you, it's not my issue :). You know to put your stupid hat on when you look at the wondrous diagram, or to accept that you might know the future, or you might refuse to click on this link entirely.
( To make things extra-safe, I'm going to use my newfound powers of hiding text to put the rest of the discussion under this cut. I'm terrified of the legions of Kirkpatrick fans. Legions - do not click on this. )
