Sorry many of you missed a very happy evening. We weren't as snarky as I thought we would be, but we were very, very happy.

My thought right now is how very young our new government is. Our Prime Minister-elect and his Deputy are very close to my age. This is the first time ever the conditions I've lived through have become even vaguely normative. This means that things will be different. Julia Gillard's youth was scarred by the same lack of jobs and futures as my youth. Kevin Rudd might be fiscally conservative for a Labor leader because his early adulthood included seeing the erosion of the value of money and of security.

We have a Prime Minister who knows what geeks and nerds are and can speak Mandarin. We have an electorate that has protested against racism (I love it that the people of Lindsay voted against those leaflets!!) This Australia was here, always, half-hidden and in danger of demolition. I don't know if it's any better than the Australia we shrugged off today, but it's one in which I feel as if I belong.

No, I'm not coherent. I am, however, really, really relieved.

If I want to enter into a mood of crawling despair and self-loathing, all I have to do is not write enough fiction.

Doesn't it enrich your life to know this important fact of mine?
