Dec. 6th, 2007

It's December 6th. Aren't you impressed with my capacity to know the date? You ought to be, since I'm redeeming a promise from last year.

Last year, a bunch of people who should have known better were plaguing me to tell my favourite St Nicolas' story. It's not a Christmas story and I forgot on his particular day, so I went on with other things. This year the gnat-like wish for the story has returned and today *is* his particular day. (They could have googled it - it's a mystery to me why they didn't. Except for [livejournal.com profile] eneit who was obviously seeing how far she could stir. She should be careful, because I might retaliate with a whole year of really icky stories relating to various saints. The advantage of being a Jewish Medievalist is that one knows some really not-likable things about the history certain other religions. It's a pity I'm a mostly-tactful person, isn't it?)

Anyhow, I have given careful consideration as to how I might tell this story with charm and with tact and with an awareness of and respect for cross-religional sensitivity. There is no way. None. I will fall into snark the moment I start. So instead of telling you a story, I'm sending you to a website where it is told with much more respect than I am capable of today.

I'm disrespectful about my own religion today, too, in case you were wondering. I just feel generally snarky. My body is paying for yesterday and it emerges as snark (my humours are imbalanced). Since someone has just carefully explained to me about Chanukah bushes because I evilly said I didn't know what they were, I feel that discretion is important and so is tongue-biting (and how could anyone who knows me not realise I'm Jewish, anyhow?)

PS I think I might make a 19th century vegetarian cheese fritter recipe for my Chanukah party on Saturday. Except, since I'm in a mood and a half, I might make it Passover-friendly.
