After side excursions into writing alternate realities, a paranormal romance, and editing a dark comedy, I'm back writing a horror short.
markdeniz and
amandapillar both said they used news items to inspire their horror, and news items are a good source, but my story in In Bad Dreams ~ Vol 1 was inspired by my childhood, and a teenage party.
I had to take my teenage daughter to a party. A common enough occurrence, but we live in rural Australia, going to a party means driving quite some distance past many many paddocks. On the way I saw some crows on a fence. Now, having grown up on a merino stud farm, I have an absolute loathing of crows. Especially at lambing season. As I drove past one crow fluttered lazily from fence post to ground, and my story began to take shape.
My daughter takes full credit for the story, especially all the times I've been asked "But how could a mother write something like that?" *g*
