Feb. 22nd, 2008

Today I had several conflicting interests. I decided to go to the Royal Canberra Show and do everything else in the evening. It only delayed some of the conflicts, but I consoled myself that it was a decision in a week where I have about 36 hours work for every 24 hours awake and were I'm still recovering from whatever low-grade virus I had last weekend. It was the best decision I could have made. If I had stayed home I wouldn't've got much done anyhow, because it was shaping to be one of those days from the moment I got out of bed.

From the moment my friend picked up up, everything changed. We had a totally fabulous day at the Show and did lots of fun things, but I also got a bunch of work done. I will have (in a few days) lots and lots of useful photos of classic Aussie foods. I know much more about how Show judging affects the meat food chain, I've made new contacts in the local wine industry and the bushfood industry, I got to taste the best mead I have ever had in my life (I'll do a detailed report on that on my food blog, when the pictures come through, also on the bushfoods) and I got to buy showbags and go on a giant ferris wheel.

I also made a careful scientific analysis of the faces behind the Liberal stall and the Labor stall. The local Labor party were totally cheeful and laughing, and the Liberals were making a valiant effort. I could have got a Liberal hat if I had wanted one, but I couldn't think what I'd use it for.

I also went on the worst Haunted House ride in the universe, which is not related to the Liberal Party, despite them having something of a haunted house to deal with right now. If you want a ride so very sadly done that it's hilarious, you need to go to the Royal Canberra Show. Everyone needs a ride with so very much rubber.

Everyone kept giving me things. There are always freebies at the Show, but I have about a dozen pens, two nice t-shirts, several shopping bags, a frisbee, another throwing thing, a cookbook, a badge, magnets and some amazing bush foods. Did I mention I was given a taste of mead? Of course I did, I just wanted the taste memory back by mentioning it again.
