My illegible notes have mostly magically been transformed into a teaching handout. I need to make some more to keep the mystification factor high on my desk. I still have the note about offal: maybe that's sufficient?

Today is for bits of housework (get the worst underway before a hectic week), bits of admin (ditto) and some writing. I printed out my notes for the ghost novel and want to have them and my map in close proximity and do the big bits of plot that intertwine with character. Then I can send it back into my subconscious for the frantic week ahead and it can safely work away at itself while I teach and wend my way through historical minefields.

Did I say that after having decided I needed there to be ghosts of bushrangers in the novel that Karen Herkes told me there actually is a local ghost of a bushranger? He's linked to a story about hiddden treasure and a cave on Black Mountain. The cave was discovered and it's very small and there is no hidden treasure, but I was rather chuffed that the story of the ghost exists. Also, that we have stories of hidden treasures.

Part of the problem with Canberra's image is that the wider Aussie public assumes that we have no such thing as glamorous folklore. It turns out we have a lot, from hairy men, to evil sprites who drown innocents, to bushrangers' gold. There's even one of the foulest ghost stories I have ever heard, linked to the public service and a very real event.

I've always maintained that Canberra is a palimpsest city. It looks like one thing on the surface, but below the surface are all sorts of amazements, hidden from sight. The longer I live here, the more hidden layers I discover.
