Dec. 21st, 2008 02:01 pmI am so pleased. I have reconfigured the food for tonight and I think I shall get enough rest before so I can actually enjoy seeing friends.
What have I done? I have put away all the biscuits, and replaced them with nice bread. Very, very nice bread. Wood-fired oven Italian. A bit of the bread was for tonight anyway, but most of it was for me, later in the week. I can eat water crackers, and giving my guests the bread means that I can simplify the rest.
I've taken the salty cheese that was for later in January and cut it into tiny cubes, and put it in bowls with pitted kalamata olives (salty but oh, so yummy with a good Italian bread). I shall have sweet cheeses and quince paste. I shall have tiny lotus cakes and Indonesian sweets (which I can make myself - they're dead easy normally, but I had an emergency stash for moments like these and today is the day for emergency stashes to be broken open) and lots and lots of snacky food (chips and coffee sweets, mainly). With the corn chips I shall now serve - instead of the really interesting stuff I had planned - sour cream, home-made guacamole and grated tasty cheese. I shall cut up some heritage carrot perhaps, and make a plate of carrot and tomato for those who care about a balanced diet. There is chocolate, of course and there will be latkes if anyone wants to learn how to make them. If anyone turns out to need more, I have the makings of mini-pizzas.
And my flat will be its usual state. No special scintillating clean (except for the bath and basin, thanks to my new wonder cloth). Everyone knows about my health - I'm sure they can handle the fact that I've had three bad weeks.
So I get a rest and lots of pain relievers and have a totally nice evening with friends. Suddenly Chanukah is looking less stressed. And I'm going to spend the next two hours in bed, reading.
PS I forgot to buy lemons! No, you didn't need to know that. But I never have no lemons. It's un-Gillianish. I have emergency stashes for that, too, though.
