Dec. 24th, 2008 11:12 amI've been thinking about present-giving recently. Why hasn't my family ever developed the habit of it? Why do other people swear by it? It's not the physical possession part of it. There are other ways of getting physical possessions than hoping for someone to remember your secret dreams at Christmas or for a birthday.
I think it's the emotions. The presents I treasure the most are the ones I associate with happy memories. The ones that make me ache inside are the ones given reluctantly or with burdens of unhappiness or doubt.
I think it's the memories. Every present carries a bit of the giver with them and the memories of a precious person enrich one's life.
I think it's the reminder. Presents are one way for friends and family to remind us that we are worthwhile human beings.
That's why the spirit of giving is so much more important than the size of the gift. A gift given in happiness and communicating love carries some of that love and happiness into our future.
