Apr. 22nd, 2009 06:04 pmI'm MCing a dance event in May. I'll get to see all my Canberra folkdance friends, and get to warn them about the impending doom of morris dancers.
The trouble with MCing a folk dance event is that one has to be able to say things. I used to be asked because I could pronounce (with an Australian accent) French, German and Israeli dance titles. I was extra-specially good with dance titles from the English-speaking world. This didn't help me with Romanian, Bulgarian or Chinese.
I've been promised a dance list ahead of time so that I know how much public embarrasment I'll be up for. I've already suggested that Joc Batranesc is a lovely dance. It's fun, the music is gorgeous and yes, I can pronounce it. At least I think I can. I can pronounce Shedemati. I'm sure I can. Maybe. La Bastringue? Depends what sort of accent you want.
You know, ten years ago I was way more confident about these things.
