Oct. 18th, 2009 07:45 pmToday I meant to teach a whole heap of things. It's the first day of a six week workshop and I wanted to ground my students in developing world views for their worlds for when they novel-write. We spent over two hours talking about how people interpret cosmologies and what it means to create a cosmology for a built universe as opposed to have characters who work within what they think that cosmology is. It became very technical and I think there'll be overspill questions next week.
I need to work on better teaching methods for writers - it's easier to teach about it (and easier to understand, for the students) than to teach it in a way that can be instantly lifted and used in fiction, especially for writers who are just discovering what novels can do.
Next week will be simpler, in any case. We're not talking about deity and how universes operate and how poeple perceive they operate and how that affects the way plot and character and stuff happens in a novel. Next week we're talking about birth, marriage, death and afterlife. No problems.
