Oct. 22nd, 2009 11:15 pmI've had some really nice internal dialogues today. I'll pretend it was very witty internal dialogue so you can feel you've missed out on something important.
I did find my 1941 Melbourne street directory and my Sydney street directory* from considerably more recently.
The Melbourne directory has a really good ad for fumigation, a fabulous one for Kirkwood's (who can supply you with Cash Registers, Scales *and* Bacon Cutters - what else could you possibly require in life?) and AC Slamen, supplier of kookaburras, wrens and wattle on mulga wood slabs. Moreover, it has a nice little notation of "Railway, not in use" which I think might be my sugar train. Or it might not be, since there are similar lines that go in concentric circles. I might have to scan the maps and compare them to modern parkland. Or I could do real research and save myself much time, but that would spoil the fun.
*I might spend a day on the ferries and in museums in mid-November - anyone free that day is welcome to join me. It'll be ferries and museums then more ferries then another museum then ferries and ferries and ferries. There may be icecream. I shall take a camera. Partly this is for potential teaching and partly this is for potential novel and partly it's because I've wanted to do this for 30 years and partly it's because people keep telling me I never take a day off. A day on and around Sydney Harbour is as day-offish as they come!
