Today is tired and bedraggled. The heat makes me feel lazy, but somehow I've done work. I've complained a lot along the way, but I've worked. This is very mysterious.
Also along my tired and bedraggled route, I've bought 2/3 of the various comestibles for Saturday. I will have two sauces to make, and two salads, and two cakes, but only one shopping trip. The black beans are already soaking for my black bean salad, which takes at least three days to make but is worth it. The other salad is fresh and the sauces fit the snacks that get dipped into them, so that's all decided. The last big question is, of course, what sort of cakes?
I doubt I'm making latkes this year. I will not gain in popularity by this, but it's such a hot summer and latkes make my flat oily and cramped. I have deep-fried Indian snacks to take their place.
The lady at the new Indian shop and I had such a nice conversation about handling festivals of light in hot weather and we came to some very good conclusions. No-one will starve on Saturday and I shall not perish from cooking in the heat and it will be a very good Chanukah indeed. I've almost got together the ingredients for emergency bhel-puri, should next week be fraught. And I've cooked various curries to eat for the rest of this week.
It's been ages since I've been able to be this organised about food. It's almost like tipping up a rock and finding my old self hidden underneath. My old personality was obviously lizardly in nature.
All I need is to make something for tomorrow's picnic lunch and life is fine. Pity I didn't remember tomorrow's picnic lunch when I went shopping.
PS There was no pickled children story yesterday because I've decided to promote good cheer and merriment. I know the Medieval miracle tales are very seasonal (especially ones involving Nicholas of Bari), but from now until the last day of Christmas I shall refrain. It may be fun for me to recycle Medieval miracles, but really, they're not happy stories. If you feel neglected, just ask and I'll post my grandmother's Jewish Christmas pudding recipe instead. It's not kosher, but then, why should a Christmas pudding recipe be kosher?
PPS Is it just my life that's full of interesting contradictions, or is it everyone's?
