Questions!
Apr. 10th, 2010 11:01 amI haven't had a question post in a while. This is largely because the last one was such a squib that I decided no-one wanted to ask me anything any more. I'm getting a lot more odd queries off LJ: everything from the structure of novels to where the site is for the next natcon. There have been Medieval questions and SF convention questions and recipe questions and questions about Australia and about Judaism. I feel a bit like a newspaper agony aunt, except that etiquette questions have not appeared. Two particularly thorny pieces of etiquette have just come my way (not things I can really discuss in public, though one instance arose as a result of an LJ interaction) so I'm well up on what not to do in polite society.
So, this is a question and answer post. For anyone who has not yet had the pleasure, you can ask anything you like, but I reserve the right either not to answer or not to take you seriously. I will, for instance, probably give evil answers to etiquette questions, simply because the only etiquette I get right at the moment is the bad stuff.
Lo, these many years ago question posts started as a chance for writers to ask those historical fiddly things that they needed for their fiction and that were bugging them. I'm still happy to answer questions about fiddly historical whatevers. The old conditions still apply, however. I'll only answer questions that can be answered (reasonably) in a few minutes, without additional research from my end. If it takes lots of time and effort or no easy answer exists, I'll tell you, but I won't do your research for you (unless you pay - this is an income issue, you see - I need money to fund my shocking food habit). If you need a piece of data to insert cunningly into a novel as telling detail, then you'll get a better answer if you give some context ie if the exact data you want won't work or doesn't exist, I may be able to come up with alternatives. Same thing with SCA costumes, creating an historical dinner etc. The more I know the easier it is for me to identify how I can help you.
I declare this question post open! In fact, you've got 'til Tuesday to ask anything. OK, not anything. I've answered 'How long is a piece of string?' and 'What's your shoe size' a while back.
