Today is a day when I had vast amounts of intelligent thoughts and then I had a nap. When I woke up, my vast amounts of intelligent thoughts had all evaporated into dreams. Instead of trying to be clever again, I spent chunks of time finding out that I just don't think in the right direction to design headquarters inside a cave system. I want a map and I want to know how much living and working space each person needs and how one person will impact upon another and what to do with water and sewerage (power and light were simple, once my maps had produced the perfect location) and how to leave the whole thing just vulnerable enough if something goes wrong.

The last bit I did. I have several potential new plot bunnies to play with. In fact, right now plot bunnies are multiplying: when I have my characters worked out, some of the plot bunnies will transform into dust bunnies and get swept out the door. Inventing problems is easy. Designing living spaces is driving me crazy.

Maybe tomorrow I'll do a day on the dissertation and on my paper for AussieCon (did I say that I'm giving a paper at AussieCon? I can't remember.). I'll get back to the caves over the weekend.

If I can't work it out before I go to Melbourne, I might consult with certain relatives who have the magic skills of drawing and visualisation (my committee novel was saved by one of these people - she made my landmass work from my rather vague descriptions. Their names appear in the Baggage dedication - with reason. I can't say they keep me sane, but they can all draw and they can all think laterally about crucial things like cave living. I'll ask their advice if I can't sort it myself. I want to advance on this bit of wordbuilding, though, so I'm hoping to sort it myself. And I know karst caves somewhat, as part of my misspent youth (you know, where other families got holidays we had geological field trips?) so I know some of the factors I need to take into account. I just can't draw to save my life.
