National Science Week
Aug. 17th, 2010 09:11 pmI've taught 2/3 of my workshops for the ACT Library Service and they have been so much fun. Bright and thoughtful people who are very willing to fall in love with my way of using books for story development. Tonight's group was the 15-18 year olds and I couldn't help but wonder what the mother thought who picked up her teenage daughter and had to wait for her to check out two very big bags of books.
I managed to fit in world building, character development and adding tension to the plot, all by walking the class through the non-fiction section and getting them to find the right books for that aspect of their tale. One student had to change her story from time travel past to time travel future, because the Library's holdings on historical legal systems was insufficient. We also did a little writing, and we talked about everything from professionalism in working as a writer to how to narrate for a specific audience.
Both sessions were hour and a half, so we didn't get very deep but we certainly covered interesting terrain in our exploration. I hope my students enjoyed it as much as I did!
PS My last workshop is on Saturday and overlaps with a vist to the library by the Daleks. I'm tempted to wander round after them and take notes of which books they borrow. Dalek reading habits is something I really need to understand.
