I spent a large chunk of today at the doctor's. I'm progressing nicely overall, but have an all-new battery of tests after AussieCon, plus my return visit to the cardiologist. I managed to finish Paul Davies' book while I was waiting, and to talk about AussieCon and Dr Who with the young guys in the Chinese grocery. They persuaded me to buy lots of leafy green vegies "I have to sell it," one confided. "He has to sell it," his friend reinforced.

I've nearly finished the Angry Robot books. I've decided to post both reviews together, maybe later tonight. I think that will be all the reviews I can do until I get back. I only have two to go after that, and they're both non-fiction and require a different kind of work.

Tomorrow is mostly social, but I need to collect materials and thoughts for the talk I'm giving at the Melbourne Jewish Museum. Basically, I need handouts, since I can't carry whole books down.* A bibliography, I think, and a few interesting title pages and sample recipes. I'll have to tactfull check ahead if they want to hear about Shoah cookbooks. I suspect not: some of them have personal knowledge of concentration camps - they don't need to hear it from me. I suspect the main focus of my talk will be on reconstructing Jewish cooking from the Middle Ages (I've only done a little - but I have a good knowledge of the work of those who are experts) and I'll talk about the first Australian Jewish cookbook. I'll have an article up about that same cookbook soon, I think.

On Sunday morning I'm being taken by a food expert to a place that produces cider and other goodness. I'll tell you about it when I get back.

Saturday is my transition day. I won't be a foodie and I won't be a writer and I won't be an historian. I'll be zooming back and forth between the three mental zones. I have a giant stack of papers that need dealing with. Course proposals for next year. Stuff for my dissertation. Requests for information. Invoices. Possible papers. Possible other stuff of all sorts. It's a very intimidating pile. And it all has to be finished with before AussieCon. Maybe I'm glad that on Sunday I'm in food history mode near Braidwood for a bit.

* Or rather, I can't carry any more books than I'm already carrying.
