I can't find regular candles suitable for Chanukah anywhere. Not the specialist candle shop (they only have dinner tapers and fancy candles and pillars), not the supermarkets (tiny birthday candles that don't last long enough or household candles full of tallow or special Christmas candles with pretty Christmas decorations), not Eckersley's (but they'll sell me wax and I can make my own - and they knew what I was talking about and haven't seen them anywhere either) and not BigW. BigW suggested that the discount shops might have candles. I shall start tomorrow with the ones in Tuggeranong and then move to the Woden one - it's a vast waste of precious time and energy, but it's also my own fault for not getting them when I was local to them. I suspect, though, that my brain said "Ordinary small wax candles - easy." They used to be *everywhere*.

Or I shall become an Ancient Roman Jew this year, with extra virgin olive oil and diwali lamps and string. If I can find diwali lamps that are small enough...

ETA: For those who have been following the Saga of the Candles, [livejournal.com profile] yasminke is coming to the rescue and posting me some candles from Sydney. If I drove and wasn't working tomorrow, I could have gone to the Jewish Centre and bought some there, but it wasn't physically possible (the Jewish Centre is a pain in the neck to get to by public transport, and I am not having an easy week) but the Woden Christian Bookshop says they have votive candles that are the right size. These will do nicely until Australia POst delivers [livejournal.com profile] yasminke's emergency package.

Next year I plan to not do all of the things that meant I wasn't really thinking about candles until it was almost too late.
