My class and I had fun this morning. We talked about word derivations and when we would use words of what sort of origin. This was all my fault as I gave the word of the day as 'fatigue' and that led us into the difference in use between it and 'tired'. We had such a ball exploring the nuances in use based on word origin that somehow we fell into discussing vocabularies for specific social groups and talked about insider language and outsider language and how readers interpret vocabularies specific to a group. We were supposed to be analysing "The Man from Snowy River" but only got one word done and are leaving the rest till next week. Somewhere in the midst of all this we did our regular grammar segment and using the sense of touch in writing. We finished off the class with turning the touch of unknown objects into metaphors for fatigue. Actually, that's not quite right. That was our second last exercise. Our final exerise was reminding ourselves that what we touch changes over time: I blew plastic bubbles at my students.

I found a new shortcut on the way home. This was a mistake. A big mistake. It takes me via the Indian shop. I was strong and only bought useful items. Then I started talking to the owner (who was worried becasue I hadn't been in for a bit) and I ended up spending all my spare change on Bollywood DVDs. She was worried because I had not seen any of them with subtitles and so had missed important lines. I was worried because my life used to be full of romantic Bollywood musicals and recently it hasn't been. Now all our worries have been solved. Well, except one. She tells me she has prior claim to my favourite star.

If anyone visiting me has a great desire to watch Bollywood romances with me, all you have to do is say. I will even whip out my tea masala and make proper Indian tea to go with the movie.

Why do I feel a sudden craving for chicken biryani?
