John Fowles is dead. I don't normally do obituary posts, because so many interesting people die that such posts would lead to a a route of extreme emotional exhaustion. So why this post? Because I am going to wait to see if the inevitable wave of reading and re-reading the French Lieutenant's Woman causes a wave in novels with multiple endings down the track.

I also need to know (in some important part of my soul) how all my friends pronounce 'lieutenant'. I realised today that I actually pronounce it in three different ways, depending on external factors. Sometimes I pronounce it Australian ('leftennant'), sometimes US ('lootennant') and sometimes French ('lieutenant'). I am not pretentious. Much.

PS I was given a book in which a character called Ben Peek appears. Anyone who wants to see Mr Peek as a grizzled denizen of Colorado and is willing to give the book to Ben once they have finished with it, tell me and I will hand the book over. Not that I have ever met Ben, but it just seems to me that if his name has been put into a book by a best-selling writer, he needs a copy. (I am regularly told that I am guilty of cruelty, so explaining this to me will not change my life at all.)
