May. 14th, 2006 02:06 pmWhales are much on my mind today. And silphium. Whole economies structured round both of them, till one was endangered and the other was gone forever. It's strange to want something so much you destroy it. Using this perverse logic, Nazis wanted to be Jewish and Gypsy: it was envy that led to Holocaust.
This post was brought to you by Yom haShaoh, which was on my birthday this year. I didn't realise how important it was to exorcise demons - without that day of mourning, the bitterness of the murders fills the mouth with tears for weeks.
At least this week brings a happier festival. Lag b'Omer, where Jews prove we can count wheat. Then there is Shavuot which is a food festival. If people in my vicinity drop lots of hints I might do some scrummy cooking. Or post more family recipes. Till then (or at least till Lag b'Omer) I will think on the saddest cookbook I have ever seen and one I don't have the courage to own: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/europe/december96/cook_12-17.html
