My grandmother couldn't ever think of what to get us for Jewish New Year. She bought us an awful lot of scratchies and lottery tickets. I think one of our vast family won $5 just one time.

There are better ways of doing the lottery type of present. The Old Foodie told me about the Menu for Hope, which is the sort of raffle I would rather my grandmother had thought of. Lots of delicious prizes all over the world, and if you don't get a prize the money still does good. I made a list of all the prizes I wished I could have then I drew one out of a hat and spent my treat money for the week on it since I can't go outside, it being all bushsmokey (I did put out my rubbish, and it was a *mistake* - I can breathe again now :) ). I feel much less trapped by the smoke now I have spent my treat money :).

The list of Asia-Pacific prizes is here and totally delectable and I keep wanting to drop hints about me having 8 days of Chanukah starting tomorrow. Instead I'm going to suggest you buy yourself a present. We are all a bit tired this time of year and the fun of this is that even if you don't win you get to dream about 5 kinds of chocolate or a facial/massage or a degustation menu or a little package of food history written just for you by The Old Foodie.
