It appears half of south Canberra is suffering or will suffer from this virus and it's every bit as ick as my personal experience suggests. I'm through the worst, though and drinking instant chicken soup with much aplomb. Also sleeping.

The good thing about fewer fevers (try saying *that* in a hurry, six times over: fewer fevers fewer fevers fewer fevers fewer fevers fewer fevers fewer fevers ) is that my dreams are interesting again. Although I admit it was a bit bizarre spending most of the morning asleep and - while asleep - explaining to dozens of people at a Fayre thing (where I'd been set up as an arbiter of correct period) why their costumes were wrong. The costumes at this Fayre were supposed to be late thirteenth century, though I was only identifying things as correct when they looked as if they came from a Hollywood set. My favourite costume of all looked as if it was designed for a Stravinsky ballet chorus, and the owner said it was central European, from Georgia. This made entire sense to my sleeping self.

What else do you need to know?

The ACT Writers Centre is a wonderful place full of wonderful people. Martine rang up all my students this morning and explained about me being sick (she rang while I was dreaming of Georgian firebirds, in fact) and my course has been rescheduled to June 2. Since it's being readvertised (in case Woden suits people more than Gorman House did - it certainly suits me better - I get to wake up an hour later!), I'll paste the details at the bottom of this post.

The other thing I'll paste is a workshop by Sophie Masson. There's one by Graeme Orr, too. And a bunch of others. I didn't realise quite how many until we tried to find a room to reschedule Saturday into. The ACT is such a small place to host so much writing stuff. it's worth keeping an eye on their website.

This post is as close to work as I can get today - basically I want to spend all my time asleep. I suspect I'll be online on and off and I bet I comment on blogs, but I also bet I allow my work to stockpile :). From tomorrow lunchtime I'm back on deck, though and will have days of catching up to do!

Fiction writers and history with Gillian Polack
Saturday 2 June from 9.30am-12.30pm Bookings essential on 6262 9191 $45 memebers, $60 non-members
This is an introduction to history research for the fiction writer. It looks at the difference between the questions fiction writers ask and the questions historians answer and discusses strategies for finding the information you need for your writing. During the course we will talk about what history is and how histories are written. We will look at the importance of using the past or a sense of the past to enrich your novel and how to use it without weighing the novel down. We will also address issues such as how historically accurate fiction can and should be and how to deal with critical comments about historical accuracy.
NB The outline is the same as the Sydney course later in the year, but Sydneysiders get a full two-day-far-more-depth-and-skills version. Just in case Sydney friends see the familiar wording and were wondering.
