Oct. 17th, 2007

We've reached a stage with the Aurealis Awards when the vast majority of nominations are in. If you meant to nominate something, you're running out of time. We have just days left then our lists are complete.

I love this moment I'm in. I read one book after another and they start to form a mosaic in my mind and to show me what Young Adult speculative fiction is like in Australia in 2007. I read one book, then I read another. Then I start the next one and suddenly I find the mosiac has whirled into a kaleidoscope. A writer has created a book that caused me to rethink everything before it and that has added to my understanding of what fiction can be and what fiction can do. I want to apologise to the Spanish Embassy and not go to their concert tonight, and ring up all my friends and tell them they can't see me until it's all over.

I'm in a sensible mood, and I'll compromise. I'll go to the guitar concert (because I know I will love it - and besides, I promised) and I will entirely enjoy my market trip on Saturday. From later tonight until Saturday morning though, I shall keep my eyes rivetted to my book-kaleidoscope, watching it turn and shift and revolve and finally settle down into a mosaic again.
