Jun. 7th, 2008 11:37 amIt's the Queens' Birthday weekend even though the reigning Queen was born in April and the King whose birthday the weekend celebrates was rather dead when Australia became a country.
In honour of all the strangeness that led to this being a nationwide holiday, I've decided to open my blog to equivalent lunacies. Please feel free to add more irrational historical celebrations in the comments, so we can all quietly go round the bend together (like the king whose birthday it is, actually, unless I've got my Georges wrong).
I was going to ask "Why did most of my US friends told me to stop for a moment and ponder all the reasons behind Memorial Day this year?" Except I know the answer to that. Then I wanted to know if the same US friends similarly respected my national days of deep thought, especially ANZAC Day or 11 November. 11 November is particularly crucial, because on this day at 11 am the Great Schism of the Western papacy was finally resolved, which isn't quite as important as the Dismissal, which also happened on 11 November. I wouldn't mind knowing if US friends stop to respect the Dismissal, as I was asked to stop in respect of their Memorial Day (and I did, being not nearly as disrespectful as I sound). I think it might cause upset if I asked, though, so I have refrained.
The trouble is, that there are three days to a long weekend (well, to this one) so I'm offering something new for the Sunday and the Monday. If I didn't do this I would become evil and satirical and would lose many friends.
Nominate topics for me to post about and I shall do my best to oblige. Mind you, if you don't nominate topics, that doesn't mean I won't post. I dreamed about the powerlessness of the silenced a couple of days ago and I'm entirely determined it won't happen again, either me being silnced or me dreaming about it. So give me questions so you get posts worth reading, rather than thirty lines each day where I repeat the words "I had a day off! Day off! Day off!"
Also, you need to know I'm in a strange mood. You need to know because it might not be obvious (much) from this post. Also that I'm taking most of the day off (I'm going to have a day off! Day off! Day off!). I mean, away from the computer, enjoying Shorter and Sweeter and gadding about in extraordinary company. This is *such* an unusual thing that I'm feeling guilt pangs already.
ETA: Martin Livings has pointed out that the Queen's birthday is not a nationwide celebration. I always thought that all of Australia had a long weekend but that the dates varied. Sorry, WA (and any other state or territory) - given how sensitive I am about dates, you would think I'd know better!
