Nov. 4th, 2009 04:26 pmToday is a day of many random thoughts. I'm still in the mood for lists of ten, so let's see what random thoughts look like, listed.
1. So many people are NaNoing and NaBloing, but I'm celebrating my personal transit through the International Month of Writerly Confusion. I can't find a Facebook group for this.
2. Shocking won me chocolate coins yesterday. And I'm already sick of jokes about the name. One day a horse will win the Melbourne Cup and it will bear the name "Fast Horse." Or maybe a "Dark Horse" will win, despite very bad odds. I ought not complain about jokes - I ought just eat my chocolate coins and be grateful. I could also, of course, stop making jokes starting "Shocking, that's all I can say about the Melbourne Cup this year."
3. I didn't realise how many writers were using my food history blog as a resource. I know other things as well as food. I know some things better (I know, this is not to be tolerated). Would a more general 'cool history' blog be just as useful to writers, though?
4. It's been a while since I've asked, but if anyone has any versions of "Mary had a Little Lamb" they think might entertain my Wednesday students, I'd be interested in hearing them.
5. Speaking of students, one was talking today about 'tomorrow's day-dream' - that phrase is going to haunt me for the rest of the week.
6. Another student suggested that there's a regular commuter train that runs to Elfland. I would read/edit/write for/applaud an anthology based on that premise. There are so many stories in it! What happens, for instance, if you miss your stop?
7. When I was in the US South I learned about bottles of homemade evil drinks, kept ready for need. I made a jug of margarita (to an historical recipe, of course) in the hopes that it will help a friend in Texas get over swine flu. If you tell me it won't help, then I'll tell you that it can't hurt.
8. I started making a list of dances I did yesterday, but gave up after 12. I wanted to ask the lady who dropped in (visiting from far eastern Europe to visit her daughter and meet her new grandson) if she recognised the dance from her country. I looked at her feet and realised that no, she didn't know it. Then I looked at the dancename again and realised that this could be because she came from a rather different country. I got the part of the world right, at least.
9. I did some housework yesterday. The only thing it did was make all the mess very visible.
10. Deborah Biancotti has written me the nicest inscription ever in my copy of A Book of Endings. Dave Luckett, on the other hand, merely wrote "Not Medieval" in my copy of Subversive Activity.
