Dec. 2nd, 2009 06:41 pmToday is one of those days that are just very slightly awry. I redeem those days by eating chips and by finishing a book. The book I finished was Tobias Buckell's Sly Mongoose. I've been saving it for such a time and it did the job. Liz Gorinsky gave it to me last year, and just now I want to tip my hat to her. I don't normally leave new books unread for so long, but I have a stack of books that are specifically for awry days and I've been working my way through them, steadily. I'll need to replenish soon, or maybe stop having awry days.
Teaching was fine, too, once we all worked out that the day's quality applied to all of us. We were going to have to work at merriment and so we did. We had three different words of the day. One of them - 'pejorative' - left us wondering why 'meliorative' just doesn't work. We decided that 'pejorative' is a grumpy word, and a very handy one to know.
I also announced that we had a loss of gravity in the classroom and that everyone had to write short stories about it. I don't see why adults can't have the same fun with stories as kids, especially on days like today.
It's not a bad day. It's just a day where we're all kindergarden squares and an infant is enthusiastically trying to shove us into round holes.
