Dear Various Nice Peoples

I appreciate your thoughtfulness in giving me Chanukah wishes this week. Five of them today alone! I'll hold them in readiness for the very next Chanukah because your kind thoughts mean a great deal to me. Remind me a bit closer to day one of the coming festival (December 1 2010) and I'll either invite you round or send you an e-gift.*

Tu B'Shvat (one of our many new years) is the next annual event in the Jewish calendar. A friend described it once as the birthday of trees. This means that Happy New Year would work in both Jewish and everyday calendars for a little, which is rather cool. Although Tu B'Shvat is at the end of January and the regular New Year is at the beginning, and Chinese New Year isn't till February. This confuses me.

To all my friends who celebrate Christmas in any way, have a happy Christmas right till twelfth night. To Festivus party-goers, happy Festivus. To those who celebrate other festivals (of which I wot not), may they be truly delightful. To everyone else, have a really lovely rest-of-week and a fabulous dying-days-of-year.

PS To the friend who was amusing about this post, first day Chanukah was 2 weeks ago. For the other friend who suggests that maybe people think that Christmas and Chanukah are the same because I spell both with 'Ch,' there might be some truth in that. I'm still getting "Have a good Chanukah" greetings, though.
