In my article for the new edition of Bibliobuffet, I got Medieval. I also talked about writing technique.

This makes a very good introduction to the open question time I promised. You can ask questions for the full length of Coyote Con (from now until the end of May) since it was Coyote Con that inspired this particular question time.

The usual rules apply. Any questions that take goodly amounts of my worktime will probably not be answered with more than a "Why don't you check this source?" Personal questions are fine, though I retain the right to refuse to answer them. Almost any question is fine, in fact, including silly ones (though I've already answered "How long is a piece of string?" and "What shoe size are you?" and really don't want to see them again.)

If you're working on a novel and need to know things like how merchants weighed goods at fairs in the thirteenth century then it's worth asking the questions. If I can't answer them specifically, I often know the right book to send you to. I know something about other periods and places and times than eleventh to thirteenth century France and England, so it's often worth putting non-Medieval questions. To anyone coming to AussieCon, it's worth asking questions here, because if I don't know the answer I bet someone else will.

To the friends who asked questions over the weekend - please ask again, here. My brain is compartmentalising because of the doctorate, which is why I need to keep all the questions to one place.

One question I was asked offblog last time was "Do I have to know you to ask a question?" The answer is, of course not. If you don't know me, though, you might want to phrase your question politely. I occasionally run into people who feel that me answering their questions is an entitlement and who are very demanding about it. Entitlement only applies if you're under six or if you're an actual student of mine.

Why do I find my dream documents as free pdfs for downloads on French government sites and then they never quite download? Ten years ago this was understandable. Now it's just one of the great mysteries of French archives. I've bookmarked everything and will download dribble by dribble. If dribbling doesn't work, then I shall try foaming at the mouth.
